Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Will class still be conducted during bad weather?

Generally, class will not be canceled due to rain, snow, cold weather or heat.  In the event of lightning, we will seek shelter and wait until the storm passes.  Exceptions may be made in the event of significant snowfall or freezing rain.  Student safety is paramount.

2.  Should I bring my carry gun or my full-sized pistol?

You may bring either handgun to training. Although, I prefer you train with your carry pistol since that will be the gun you will most likely have in the event of a critical incident.

3.  Should I bring hollow point ammunition to class?

Due to the larger number of rounds that will be fired during class most students prefer to bring a less expensive ammunition for training.

4. What type of holster should I bring?

Any good quality leather or Kydex holster is fine for class.  It should be firmly attached to a quality gun belt, not a dress belt or other flimsy discount belt.  Students may bring and use strong side hip holsters as well as appendix holsters.  Holsters designed to be worn inside the pants should be constructed so that the mouth of the holster is rigid and remains open to allow one-handed re-holstering.  Students may use holsters with or without retention aids or straps.  Nylon holsters are not recommended.

5.  Do I need to mount an optic or red dot sight on my pistol?

Students are welcome to use either traditional or optical sights of any design for class.  If a student wishes to use an electronic optic, he or she should bring a spare battery.

6.  Do I need a red dot optic, holographic sight, or scope for the rifle/carbine class?

Students may equip their rifle or carbine with any type of sights they feel most comfortable with.  Students using electronic sights should bring a spare battery.

7.  I am a new handgun owner, should I sign up for basic handgun or can I just sign up for the CCW or Handgun Level 1 course?

New handgun owners may sign up for any of the above courses as a first course.  The Basic Handgun course is designed for the student who is a first-time gun owner.  Students new to handguns but with a familiarity with other types of guns would do well in any of the courses.

8.  Do I need an AR-15 rifle in order to take the rifle/carbine class?

No, you may bring any kind of rifle you wish.  The class is designed around rifles with detachable magazines able to hold more than 10 rounds.  However, if you have a lever action or other rifle you wish to bring, feel free to do so.

9.  I have a pistol caliber carbine; can I use it in the rifle/carbine class?

Yes, you may.

10.  Do I need a weapon-mounted light for the tactical flashlight class?

No, I recommend you bring a handheld tactical flashlight as many of the drills and techniques require the use of a handheld light.

11.  I have a weapon-mounted light; can I use it during the tactical flashlight class?

You may bring and use a weapon-mounted light during the tactical flashlight class.  However, you also need a separate handheld tactical flashlight since many of the techniques and drills require a handheld light.

12.  Is there an age requirement for classes?

Students should be at least 18 years of age in order to sign up for class.  Students wanting to sign up for the MO CCW class should be 19 years old or within a month of turning 19 since they must be 19 years old to apply for their permit.  Parent’s wanting to sign their son or daughter up for introduction to handgun may do so if their child is at least 16 years old.

13.  Do I need to zero my rifle / carbine prior to class?

You may zero your rifle prior to class.  We will be checking zero during class.  If you don’t have your rifle zeroed prior to class we can zero during class.  Zeros are a matter of personal preference, so if you have a favorite zero distance, you are not required to change it for class.
